Conchita

Thomas Neuwirth, better known as Conchita, is a singer and drag queen. He started his singing career after finishing second behind Nadine Beiler (Austria 2011) on the third season of the Austrian talent show Starmania in 2007. One year later, he founded the boyband Jetzt Anders! with some fellow Starmania participants but the group disbanded within a year.

In 2011, Conchita Wurst’s first appearance on television was during the ORF talent show Die große Chance, finishing sixth overall. In 2012, Conchita took part in the Austrian national final with “That’s What I Am”. The song came in second place to Trackshittaz, who took the lead by just 2% of the vote.

In 2014, Conchita represented Austria in the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen with the song “Rise Like a Phoenix”. A firm favourite going into the contest, Conchita won and gave Austria their second victory in history, 48 years after their first. The victory was hailed as a sign of growing tolerance for the global LGBT community. Conchita then returned to host the green room at the Eurovision Song Contest 2015 in Vienna, releasing debut album “Conchita” just a few weeks prior to the contest.

In 2018, Conchita released the album “From Vienna With Love” with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. In 2019, Tom announced that he would be splitting the characters, Conchita would continue with a more feminine expression and the new character WURST would allow for a more masculine expression. The first single as WURST, “Trash All the Glam”, was released in March 2019. It was later followed by an album “Truth Over Magnitude”.

In May 2019, Conchita returned to the Eurovision Song Contest once more to take part in the Switch Song interval act, performing “Heroes” by Måns Zelmerlöw. Conchita also became a permanent judge on the drag talent show Queen of Drags.
